Hearth & Story 3rd Grade Brain Food: Uphill Through the Snow Both Ways
Some older folks like to say, “When I was a kid, we had to walk to school uphill through the snow—both ways!” That’s just another way of saying things sure have changed!
This year, your student will take a fun look back in time to see how everyday life was different when their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were kids. From phones with cords to black-and-white TVs, they’ll read short, interesting passages about how people used to live, play, and learn, and how those things have changed over the years.
Hearth & Story Third Grade Grade Brain Food uses nostalgia as a window into history, while helping kids grow as readers, speakers, and storytellers. Through creative projects, they’ll learn to explain ideas clearly, listen closely, and make connections between the past and the present.

Connect with the Past
Students will interview a relative or family friend about what their childhood was like. Then, they’ll organize what they learned and give a short speech about it, learning how to speak clearly and confidently.
Read & Remember
Kids will practice reading short nonfiction texts about everyday life in different decades, from the 1950s to the 2000s. They’ll learn how to find key details, compare and contrast, and think about cause and effect.
Make an Audiobook
In another project, students will record their own audiobook version of a favorite picture book. They’ll learn to use tone, expression, and pacing to make stories come alive for listeners.
